How does payment work?
With credit/debit
When you sign up, you will enter your credit card information, and then be charged weekly, usually on the morning of pickup. You will not be charged for weeks that you request to skip, or unscheduled weeks of your subscription. If you have questions about payment or believe you have been charged incorrectly, please email marketshare@freshfarm.org.
With SNAP
We offer the Market Share at a discounted price for anyone who receives SNAP. If you would like to purchase the Market Share using SNAP, please fill out this form to specify that you would like to pay with these benefits. We cannot accept eWIC.
To receive the SNAP rate, payments must be made with an EBT card at market. SNAP customers will not and cannot be charged online, and cannot use credit cards, cash, or any market coupons to pay for their shares.
Customers must pay for their share in full with their SNAP/EBT card at the time of pick-up. Customers may pay for up to two weeks of their share in advance if they would like.
If you RSVP for a share, but do not have funds on your EBT card to pay for it on the day of pickup, please text or email marketshare@freshfarm.org before the start of your pickup window. This will count as an excused absence. Please refer to the “Can I skip a week?” section for more information about the RSVP process for SNAP.
Can I skip a week?
For customers paying with credit/debit
Yes! If you would like to skip a week of your Market Share, please let us know one week before the pick-up date in question so that our farmers and team can plan accordingly. If you contact us to skip less than one week in advance, we will not be able to refund you for your Market Share (you could send someone to pick up your share for you, though!)
You will not be charged for the weeks you skip.
You can skip as far in advance as you like, and as many times as you like. You can also pick up bi-weekly, or on a personalized schedule.
To skip a week or set a customized pick-up schedule, email marketshare@freshfarm.org. Be sure to include your name, the location of where you pick up, and the dates you want to skip.
For customers paying with SNAP
Because customers paying with SNAP cannot be charged in advance, you will receive a weekly text asking you to RSVP for your share by a certain time. Simply do not RSVP via text for the weeks you do not wish to pick up a share. You may pick up a share as often or as you would like.
To limit wasted produce and maintain our prices year after year, we only purchase from our farmers and pack bags for customers who RSVP via text for their share.
With that in mind, if you RSVP for a share but you (or a neighbor, friend, or family member) do not pick it up, it will be noted as an unexcused absence. Customers will be removed from the program for the season after 3 unexcused absences to make room for new active participants.
However, we recognize that life happens. If you RSVP’ed but are not able to pick up your share, please let us know before the start of your pickup window at market. These absences will be excused.
Can I cancel my share for the season?
For customers paying with credit/debit
Yes, to cancel your Market Share, please email marketshare@freshfarm.org at least ONE WEEK before the pick-up date in question. Be sure to include your name and pick-up location in the subject line.
For customers paying with SNAP
Yes, you can decide to stop RSVPing for a share at any point during the season. If you would like to stop receiving the weekly texts, please text us back and let us know, or email marketshare@freshfarm.org.
What happens if I forget to pick up my scheduled Market Share?
For customers paying with credit/debit
If you do not pick up your scheduled Market Share, and did not skip that week in advance, you will still be charged full price. We are not able to “make up” your share by moving your pickup to a different location. Please refer to the “Can I skip a week?” section for details about skipping.
For customers paying with SNAP
If you do not pick up your Market Share after RSVPing AND do not let us know you will not be picking up your share, it will be noted as an unexcused absence. Customers will be removed from the program for the season after three unexcused absences. Please refer to the “Can I skip a week?” section for more information about the RSVP process for SNAP.
Can someone else pick up my Market Share?
You are welcome and encouraged to have a friend, family member, or neighbor pick up your Market Share on your behalf as an alternative to skipping a pick-up.
What farms do you source from? What are their growing practices?
We source from small and mid-sized family-owned farms in the Mid-Atlantic. In 2023, 24% of our farmers identified as Black and Brown, and 29% were first-generation farmers.
We tend to work with smaller farms that face cost and administrative barriers to becoming USDA organic certified. While some of our farmers may not be certified, they tend to use responsible practices. The sourcing for Market Share varies from week to week, but the majority of the produce in our bags is sourced from the following farms. Their farming practices are linked.
- Pleitez Produce Farm
- Barajas Produce
- Quaker Valley Farm & Orchard. Scroll to the bottom for the section titled “How our Produce is Grown”
- Mickley’s Orchard
How do I report damaged produce?
If you received damaged or spoiled produce, please let us know via email at marketshare@freshfarm.org. Please include a picture of the damaged produce if possible, and we will try our best to address the issue.
Can I return old Market Share bags?
Yes! We will gladly accept them and reuse them. Bring them back to your pickup location, or leave them where you receive your delivery.
How will I know what is in my bag each week?
As a Market Share subscriber, you will receive weekly emails that include a list of items in the bag, recipes, and storage tips. Generally, you will receive this email the day before your Market Share pick-up, or the morning of. We try our best to share the contents of your bag as soon as we have it, but we work with farmers week to week, so it is often last minute.
Your bags will also include a QR code that links to activities, recipes, and other resources on our website featuring the items in your bag.
What kinds of items can I expect in my share?
For the number of items and descriptions of the Family and Personal Share, please refer to our Market Share page.
The produce in your Share will fluctuate week to week and is based on what is in season. Click here to see what types of produce you can expect during each month of the season. Though it is not guaranteed, you will likely receive many of the items listed under “Good Supply” multiple times, and “Limited Availability” and “Specialty Items” often, though less frequently.
Can I swap items in my Market Share if I don’t like them or have dietary restrictions?
Our procurement team works hard to curate Market Share bags that are widely enjoyed and generally easy to cook with, while still including some lesser-known or specialty items once in a while. However, we do not offer the option to swap or add produce to the share. If you have strong vegetable preferences or dietary restrictions the Market Share may not be the right program for you.
There’s severe weather forecasted, is my Market Share pick-up canceled?
We operate rain or shine! We do not close down due to weather conditions unless dangerous conditions are predicted. In the event that we are forced to close, we will communicate in advance via email and/or text to Market Share members.
I have questions!
